beauty in the details

Good photography comes from a state of grace.

~ Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain

"For Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain
beauty was in the details:
a child's face, a dog, a reflection.

'The perfect photograph is a kind of miracle that appears in a blaze of light...

You press the button almost by chance and the miracle happens'."

open up within me the gate to awareness of you

O name of Jesus,
key to all gifts,
open up for me the great door to your treasurehouse
so that I may enter and praise you
with the praise that comes the heart
in return for your mercies
which I have experienced in latter days;
for you came and renewed me
with an awareness of the New World…

Gather my mind into the silence of prayer,
so that all my wandering thoughts
may be silenced within me
during that luminous converse
of supplication and mystery-filled wonder.

O Sun of righteousness
by which the righteous beheld their own selves
and became a mirror for their generations,
open up within me
the gate to awareness of you.

Psalm 104: a meditation in pictures

Bless the Lord, O my soul.
    O Lord my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honor and majesty,
    wrapped in light as with a garment.

Pamplona poppies, 2003

You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
    you set the beams of your chambers on the waters,
you make the clouds your chariot,
    you ride on the wings of the wind,
you make the winds your messengers,
    fire and flame your ministers.

Sea of Galilee, 2012

You set the earth on its foundations,
    so that it shall never be shaken.
You cover it with the deep as with a garment;
    the waters stood above the mountains.

From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
    the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

Río Frío, Leakey, TX, 2005

The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,
    the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
In them the birds build their nests;
    the stork has its home in the fir trees.

You make darkness, and it is night,
    when all the animals of the forest come creeping out.

O Lord, how manifold are your works!
    In wisdom you have made them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.
Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
    creeping things innumerable are there,
    living things both small and great.

These all look to you
    to give them their food in due season...
When you send forth your spirit, they are created;
    and you renew the face of the earth.

Malibu, CA, 2006

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    for I rejoice in the Lord...
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord!
